Looking for the manufacturer’s mark on glass is the best way to verify a piece’s authenticity and age. While to date I haven’t seen any “counterfeit” Mosser cats being sold, it is important to note which mark it is. This is especially true of the Sitting Cats (#101) as you will want to distinguish between the vintage (1976-2007) and reissued (2023 and later) pieces.
Fortunately, finding and identifying the marks on Mosser cats is pretty easy!
Sitting Cats (#101)
On the vintage cats, you can find the Mosser “M” on the lower back of the cat to the left, at the base of the tail.
On the new cats, you will find the Mosser “M” inside the outline of the state of Ohio on the lower back of the cat in the center. It is a “shield shaped” mark, and it’s directly to the right of where you find the mark on a vintage cat. In fact, if you look closely you may be able to see a faint image of the old mark beside it on the left.
Here are the two marks side-by-side (L – vintage, R – new):
Another mark you may find is an “M” – either a large M or a smaller M in a circle – on the bottom of the cat. These are only found on cats made up until the mid 1980’s. They were hand-stamped, so may be missing from some pieces.
Big M:
M in a circle:
A few very early pieces, including the blue milk pictured above do not have the “M” on the back. All the newer cats are marked.
Unmarked vintage cat:
Reclining / Laying cat (#194)
The “M” can be found on the bottom of the cat
Kitten on a Nest / Basket Salt (#235)
The mark is found inside of the lower (basket) half. These kitties can have either the old or the new mark (see above.) Old mark pictured here.
Fluffy Cat / Kitten / Kitty (#123)
The mark is on the cat’s lower right, between the front and rear legs. It is tiny and can be especially tricky to see on satin finish and hand painted cats – a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loupe will help you spot it!
